“Yet mark’d I where the bolt of Cupid fell,

It fell upon a little western flower,

Before milk--white, now purple with love’s wound,

And maidens call it love-in-idleness.”

I thought about that quote for a minute. “So, Cupid’s arrow made it bleed?”

“Yes,” she responded. “You could say that.”

“So much for true love being a happy thing, huh?” I grinned a little and rolled my eyes.

“Well, yes … and no.” She pushed her red hair back behind her ear and smiled her crooked smile at me. “He says here in the same play that ‘the course of true love never did run smooth.’ I think that applies to all kinds of love, not just romantic love. Friends, families, all of us. We always struggle with disagreements and hurts. It’s all part of the big picture.”

“You think so?” I hadn’t really considered this before, and I wasn’t sure I liked it. “Pain is just part of love, part of friendship?”

“I do. It stinks, but look how beautiful the outcome can be,” she said, pointing at my pin. “The flower wouldn’t be half as pretty if it stayed all white, would it? Look at how much more interesting and beautiful it is with the colors.”

I smiled politely and filed that thought away for later, but honestly right that minute, I was pretty mad at my friends, and not really in the mood to be philosophical about it. I was trying not to feel that way, but it wasn’t working.
